What Ogham is
Ogham is an alphabet of straight strokes and notches cut along a central line, usually the edge of a standing stone. About 400 inscriptions survive, most of them in Ireland, with others in Wales, Scotland and the Isle of Man. The oldest date roughly from the 4th to the 6th century, and most simply record a person's name and family.
The twenty main letters fall into four groups of five. Strokes on one side of the line, strokes on the other, strokes that cross it, and short notches on the line for the vowels. Medieval scholars later gave each letter a name, often linked with a tree, which is where the idea of a "tree alphabet" comes from.
Ogham has no letters for J, K, P, V, W, X or Y, and Z is written with straif, whose original sound is uncertain. The converter uses the closest sound and lists every substitution it makes, so you can check the result with your artist before it goes on your skin.
